GOWN
From Saxon times through the 18th century, gowns ranged from a simple white robe for a poor bride (letting the world know that she comes into this marriage with nothing) to various colored gowns with each color having a meaning.
GOWN COLORS:
blue - constancy; a blue ribbon - purity, fidelty, & love.
green - youth;
Gold & yellow were avoided as they meant jealousy and avarice, respectively.
VEILS
were not used much until the crusades. In Saxon times the bride wore her hair loose, often interbraided with flowers and leaves.
or a veil was used to cover the face of the bride so that evil spirits would not see her.
FLOWER MEANINGS:
apple blossoms - future holds better things;
ivy - good luck; rosebud - a promise;
laurel - peace. »» Flowers to avoid
any yellow flowers - jealousy;
tulips - infidelity.
SHOEs
Throwing a shoe to an Anglo-Saxon symbolized that authority had been transferred.
Celtic Artwork for enhancing letters, invitations, and announcements
This selection of ideas is by no means complete. And in different cultures and different time periods the meanings of various things may be different. An example is the color green - during the Renaissance era some believed that green symbolized true love, yet today we see green as jealousy (the green-eyed monster as my mother would say) or as representing an environmentally friendly product. ~~ Susan

. . . an excerpt from the CelticLady's October '97 Newsletter:
Often the CelticLady is asked about Celtic weddings. She is flattered that some thinks she has all the answers
but at this time the research into this area has produced very little. The CelticLady would rather finish her research before
advising any one on their wedding plans.
