Celtic Tattoo History
Pre-Christian Celts as well as central and northern European tribes were often heavily tattooed, according to surviving accounts. A Celtic tribe in central & northern Scotland, the Picts, used Celtic tattoos with elaborate dark blue woad (or possibly copper for the blue tone) designs, in fact, the Latin word Picti is taken to mean painted or tattooed people.

Celtic Knot Meanings
Unfortunately the people of the ancient world did not write down the meanings of most knotwork. And it is possible that the knots do not have a meaning or symbol associated with them. During our modern period some of the Celtic knots have been associated with certain symbolic meanings. When enough people recognize a design as standing for something - a symbol is born. This happened thousands of years ago among different tribes. Today symbols are born when a group decides one design shall represent a special meaning to them. Thus new symbols are born out of ancient motifs blended with modern views.

CUSTOMIZING A DESIGN
(requesting a Custom Tattoo Design)

The Celtic Lady's™
often gets requests to modified an existing design - it is recommends that you take the design to your tattoo artist.
Remember the 2nd word in tattoo artist is "artist" and working directly with them will produce a more desirable design. Plus you will be able to give them personal input and guide any changes or additions - thus ensuring a design that you made personal and unique. When one sits down with a tattoo artist in person you can see the design develop and quickly decide if it is what you had in mind - and usually minor changes are made without any extra fees added to the whole process. Good luck,

~~~ A Word of Caution on Symbols ~~~
Many sites offer "meanings" for a variety of Celtic knots - unfortunately the people of the ancient world did not write down those meanings and it is possible that many knots do not have a meaning or symbol associated with them. Other designs may have developed as the Celtic tribes interacted with other cultures and wished to demonstrate the power of their gods and goddess, thus creating or assigning a symbolic to the gods or to actions or important parts of their culture. During our modern period some of the Celtic knots have been associated with certain symbolic meanings. When enough people recognize a design as standing for something - a symbol is born.
DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH
When choosing a Celtic knot for personal use - ask yourself what it means to you. A variety of retail items claim to be "the symbol for ..... " - proceed with caution here - this could just be selling tool.
The Celtic Lady's™ offers this advice after learning of a friend of her daughter who had a Chinese symbol tattooed on her thigh. She was told the symbol was for "Nurse" or "Healing". Well, she lives in San Francisco - a wonderful city full of many Chinese transplants. At her hospital she ran into a doctor from China who said that the tattoo meant something totally different from what she was told. She now has a very permanent reminder of her mistake in rushing into a decision without doing her research.
